I’ve been meaning to start a regular practice of Centering Prayer for a while now, but I always seem to get sidetracked. I’m determined to make it a priority this year, and I’m hoping that writing about my experiences will help to hold me accountable.

This is where the Examen (or “acts” model) can be helpful. The Examen is a prayerful reflection on one’s day that was developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century. It is traditionally done at the end of the day, but I find that it can be just as helpful in the morning, before the events of the day have a chance to crowd out my thoughts of God.
The Examen has five steps:
1. Give thanks to God for the good things in your day.
2. Review the events of your day and ask God to help you see them through His eyes.
3. Pay attention to the emotions you felt during the day. Ask God to help you understand what they are telling you about yourself and your relationship with Him.
4. Choose one thing from your day that you would like to change. Ask God for the strength and wisdom to do so.
5. Ask God for His guidance in the days to come.
The Examen provides a structure for reflecting on one’s day in a way that is both prayerful and honest. It is a way of dialogue with God that can lead to deeper self-awareness and spiritual growth.
